5 Beauty Tips No One Ever Told You

Awhile back I teamed up with The Everygirl to show their readers how to take their hair and makeup from the office to happy hour. Given they did such a wonderful job (especially beauty editor, Maritza Buelvas, and photographer, Christina Slaton) I thought I would share a few of the photos, along with my own beauty tips.

Ladies. I have heard and tried it all when it comes to makeup and prepping. So as a well seasoned woman, I want to save you the time, energy and money and get you to that holy grail makeup bag as quickly as possible. We need to look good and we aren’t getting any younger right?! Below are my 5 tried and true beauty tips that no one has ever told you.

1. One Size Does Not Fit All: If someone claims they have the best product, it’s simply not true. Everyone’s skin type, face shape and coloring is different. Therefore you have to find what works for YOU. Everything looks amazing in magazines, commercials, models, etc. So find advice from someone or a combination of people with similar characteristics as you – whether it be someone you know or a celebrity. Do you have oily skin? Ask for advice from other women that have the same skin type. Do you have large eyes? Take notes from another wide-eyed lady who has got it down pact.

2. Take Advantage: If you need a new compact, eyeliner or blush, be sure to get your makeup done complimentary at the beauty counter in tandem with your purchase. Make an appointment for Friday after work or before a hot date and kill two birds with one stone. We spend a lot on our makeup so why not get a our makeup applied by a professional. Now trust me, I know this can sometimes be awkward – “hey I am only buying a mascara but can you do my makeup?”. Don’t fret. I always ask if the salesperson if I can test a few things prior to purchasing. Once the product/s have been applied, I will ask if they have time to do my eyes or a quick touch up. They always say yes! Note: It goes without saying, if they apply your makeup it is an unspoken rule to buy something.

3. Test Drive: Hey if you are going to drop dough on something new, ALWAYS ask for samples to try at home first. Don’t buy the $150 La Mer cream without making sure it doesn’t breakout your skin. The salesperson may try to convince you to buy it on the spot and “if you don’t like it, you can return it.” Simply say you prefer to try it out first and ask for their business card so you can contact them directly with a purchase. They work on commission so they will appreciate that.

4. New Mascara Is The Best Mascara: Ignore rule #1 for a second. I swear a new drugstore mascara beats an old designer mascara any day. Given the more affordable price point, I can keep a fresh supply in my purse, at home and my desk.

5. Eyebrows, Eyebrows, Eyebrows: They frame your face and one of the first things makeup artists usually focus on. They add symmetry, which is subconsciously attractive. I personally love the Anastasia counter at Nordstroms. They show you what your natural shape should look like, tidy you up and offer the tools to grow and fake it until you make it.
