So your perfect sofa’s on the way and your hard work is done. Now all that’s left is opening the door for the delivery, right? Here’s the part where I tell you you’re wrong. Harsh? Maybe. Helpful? Absolutely!
You see, by not prepping for the delivery, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity to make your space look perfect. So I put together a check list of things to do before your new piece arrives. These tips will save you time and ensure you don’t lift a finger.
Consider This When Buying Your Sofa
Before I jump in, if you’re furniture shopping now, here’s something to highly consider and be aware of. When deciding where to buy your couch from, research their delivery policy. Since I purchased my sofa from Walter E. Smithe, their service comes with a white glove delivery option. Another perk of buying from them.
A white glove delivery ensures your sofa’s delivered in mint condition. If there are multiple parts {like our sectional}, they’ll set it up completely. They ensure nothing breaks and will go as far as removing your door, couch legs, or whatever necessary to create a bigger clearance. Lastly, they dispose of all packaging material, so no cleaning up for you. And in case you forgot, they’ll measure your space beforehand to ensure it fits for delivery. See I told you this whole couch thing is A LOT.
With that being said, if you’re bringing your couch home yourself, don’t worry. These tips still apply!

6 Ways To Make The Most of Your Sofa Delivery
- CLEAR THE WAY: remove obstacles outside, from the entry way and the room that your sofa will be used. Think baskets, decor, light fixtures, plants, flags and paintings. Push all other furniture out of the way too. A clear path ensures your stuff, walls and new sofa stay damage free.
- CLEAN: a clean space is the first step to a stylish space. Now that your room is clear, vacuum and wash the floors. Now’s the perfect opportunity to access those hard to reach places before your couch arrives.
- ARRANGE YOUR RUG: bring your rug out from against the wall and into the middle of the room. You don’t want to waste rug real estate under the sofa that you can’t see. Once the sofa’s delivered, you can tweak placement accordingly. P.S. This post and this post by Emily Henderson regarding rugs and placement are GOLD.
- BRING YOUR SOFA OUT FROM AGAINST THE WALL: Lots of designers say placing your sofa against the wall is a rookie mistake. Of course there are exceptions but I’m a believer! It feels more inviting, cozy and helps the furniture breathe. If you have a narrow or small room {like us}, where it must be against the wall, just pull it out slightly. It’s a little move that makes a big difference! If you have a bigger room, let it float in the center, using a rug to define the space.
- TWEEK: Once your couch is set up, ask your delivery men for a little help. Walter E. Smithe’s team is so nice! They even welcomed Larry’s curiosity {our pup!}. Take a look at the couch and rug and edit accordingly. Having their help makes the arrangement much faster than having to do it on your own.
- SIT BACK AND RELAX! Now that your sofa has arrived and perfectly placed, give’er a try! Bring all your furniture back in the room and look at your new piece in all her glory! The best part is leaving for a few hours then coming back to see your space with fresh eyes. So magical. Also, don’t forget to offer water for the delivery team. They’re working hard and deserve a little break too.
